Times passed by so quickly that it had just dawned on me there are no longer anymore ES2007 lessons. It is by no means an exaggeration when I say that ES2007 is my favourite module of all time since my matriculation into NUS.
ES2007 is the only module that I had taken where I have been able to communicate freely and got to know each and every classmate of mine quite well. I enjoy the process of making many new good friends. I like the fact that my classmates are all spontaneous, friendly and rather passionate people. Brad have also been an excellent facilitator and a good slave-driver in motivating(forcing) us to do work :).
I must also state that the module is not all fun as the workload has been quite heavy. This is especially true for the proposal and the oral presentation. I often find myself working against time to complete the assigned work promptly and with quality. There are also moments where I feel the module has never ending work, when one is completed another piece of assignment would surface. It got stressful at times!
However, the module has been extremely useful in my point of view and I have certainly learnt a lot from this course. Almost all of what I have learnt in this course would come in useful in the future, e.g. in my career. I wish I could say the same for many other modules that I have taken.
I would cherish the many moments I experienced in the timespan of taking this module and reminiscent upon those happy times!

Reflection on my oral presentation
For the oral presentation today, I felt I was very nervous. I do not understand where but I get very uptight everytime I need to give a presentation. It is perhaps due to the fact that I am an only child and do not get many opportunities to speak in public. My legs were shaking badly and I had to control it if not there could be an earthquake! I tried my best to maintain eye-contact with everybody but am not sure how successful I was. I felt my voice projection was loud and clear enough. My only worry was whether my voice was shaking when I was speaking. My body gesture was a little slanted as I was having a hip injury that was causing me some pain and I am not sure if it was too obvious. My last worry was if I had enough non-verbal cues and if the cues that I used were more helpful than distracting. I somehow also feel that I looked at the screen all too often. I wonder if it is true? Nonetheless, the presentation was a good learning experience and exposure for me. I feel better prepared and more ready for my next presentation now. I hope I am not as nervous anymore also in my next presentation.

Culture shock
Singapore as we all know is a multi-cultural society. Thus, to be able to live in harmony with each other, we have little choice but to make the effort to understand each other's cultures. This can help prevent unnecessary conflicts or arguments.
There was this incident that I recall from my secondary school. The characters involved were Nizam and my Geography teacher Mrs Fong. I have withheld their real names in this story. Nizam is a Malay and Mrs Fong a Chinese. The setting of the incident will be the classroom during a lesson.
Mrs Fong was conducting a lesson and she called for Nizam to stand up to answer a question. Nizam gave a nonsensical answer and antagonized Mrs Fong. Mrs Fong subsequently got very angry and called Nizam a “babi”, meaning pig in Malay. She was glaring at Nizam and looked as if she would kill him there and then. What fuelled the situation was probably the fact that Nizam had been a very poor student and had not been making any effort. She often asked Nizam to answer questions in a bid to make him participate in the lesson more. Nizam had to remain standing throughout the rest of the one hour lesson and he displayed a look of immense displeasure.
The next day, both Mrs Fong and Nizam were called to the principal's office. I found out later that Nizam’s parents had complained about Mrs Fong’s word usage and insensitivity. In the Malay culture, they are not allowed to eat pork, by calling them a pig it is rather insulting to the Malays and considered taboo. Mrs Fong acknowledged her oversight and apologized to Nizam and his parents. Nizam also admitted to his disobedience in class, apologized in return and fortunately this led to a closure of the matter.
My feeling at the time of the incident was that Mrs Fong certainly did not mean to insult Nizam. She was blowing her top and probably could not think logically. I felt that calling someone a pig is rather mild and she probably used the word babi seeing that Nizam was a Malay. I am pretty sure Mrs Fong did not consider any cultural issues when she scolded Nizam.
Nizam, on the other hand, probably interpreted that Mrs Fong was insulting his culture and took it personally. That led to him complaining to his parents about the incident. He was already unhappy to be called up and he was scolded next, this could have led to him to think he was being singled out intentionally by Mrs Fong.

My personal statement
I am so new to this personal statement thingy so please forgive me it if is lousy! Certainly requires cracking of the head to come up with.
As a young child I used to religiously complete all the model kits that my dad brought home. I often skipped meals and sacrificed sleep just to get the kits done up. It was then that I realized that I am an extremely determined person and it this value which I have that has certainly served me well. This is also what makes me a unique human being.
I recall an incident during my stint as a police officer, where I had to go after an illegal immigrant who was escaping from my colleague and me. I did not give up the chase even after my colleague has done so. This eventually led to the successful arrest of said subject which gave me immense pride. Determination has also allowed me to stay awake during night shifts and stay vigilant to any crime happenings.
It is also part of my character that I do not like to leave things undone. Whatever work that I have started I will make sure I complete it. It is this drive that led to me being appointed class chairman in my junior college. It is also natural that I am usually the driving force behind projects, dedicating work, contacting team members and making sure deadlines are met and work gets done.
Thus, I feel that the determination that I possess will serve me well in the working world and help me to complete the various tasks that are set out for me to do.

Dear Sir,
APPLICATION FOR FIELD SERVICE ENGINEER
I am writing to apply for a field service engineer position in your company in response to your job advertisement in the Straits Times classifieds on 29 August 2009 as I feel I have the necessary qualities to succeed in your company.
I am currently pursuing an honours degree in Electrical Engineering, expecting to graduate by May 2010 and I am seeking to start work after that. I have taken courses like electrical energy systems and electric drives and done well in them. These modules have provided me with the necessary knowledge in pump systems which helps me to fit in to one of your requirements. Apart from my academic training in the field of Electrical Engineering, my previous internships with two renowned engineering companies, SWTS Pte Ltd and Guthrie Engineering Pte Ltd, have given me hands-on experience and practical training in the field service engineering field. Thus, I will be ready for the job position if I am successful in my applications. I have also gained rotating equipment service experience in my internship as your company requires. Through my work experience, I have also confirmed that Engineering is the right field for me and I feel FLOWSERVE is an exceptional place for me to start my career.
Furthermore, during the days of my National Service with Singapore Police Force, I have had many opportunities to deal with the public daily, thereby building up strong communication skills and learning to deal with stressful situations. I rose to the rank of sergeant and had to handle the vast responsibilities and authority vested upon me. As a sergeant, I had to be motivated and act independently, which are some qualities your company seek.
My academic training and past working experience have taught me to approach various situations and challenges with both logic and flexibility. As such, I am confident that I would be able to contribute positively to Flowserve, with my technical skills and fresh perspectives.
I sincerely hope that you will grant me an interview and I will be looking forward to your favourable reply. You may contact me at 97661283 or 67669316.
Thank you for your kind attention and time taken.
Yours faithfully,
MAH KEN JIE

Blog Post 2
Disputes, conflicts and arguments seem like something that are unavoidable in life. We grow and learn from such situations if there is any consolation to be had from experiencing such unpleasant events.
There is this particularly unhappy incident that I had to experience which took place almost four years ago. The people involved are myself and Miss Y, a JC classmate with whom I used to be pretty close to. She became my “matchmaker” when she introduced my girlfriend to me, who was from the same faculty from Miss Y. We were deeply grateful to Miss Y for that and had thanked her face-to-face.
My girlfriend and I became an item just before a birthday chalet that Miss Y had organized for herself. Naturally, my girlfriend being my first girlfriend, and me being my girlfriend’s first, we were pretty affectionate at the chalet. By affectionate, I mean hugging, holding hands and whispering sweet nothings. Nothing that could not be published on these pages was done.
That night, while playing pool, Miss Y seemed very unhappy and was indeed unhappy as I found out soon. She loudly commented that my girlfriend and I were an eyesore with our actions and claimed that we did not thank her for bringing us together. I got pretty unhappy as it was not as if she did not perform such actions with her boyfriend, who is our common friend. I also explained that we had thanked her already. When my girlfriend and I were about to leave, we bid goodbye to Miss Y. Instead of reciprocating, she asked us to just “go go go and get lost.” I was really hot at that moment. I had a minor quarrel with Miss Y as a result.
From that moment on, Miss Y and I no longer communicated and she hardly does so with my girlfriend too. She does not reply to my messages even when I wish her happy birthday or offer her apologies. I really did not know what I have done wrongly. Her mood just suddenly changed that day. Could it be when she claimed we did not thank her, it was because she expected a different method of thanking her?
I hope someone can offer some possible suggestions to resolve this conflict or provide me with some inkling of what I could have done wrong?

Blog assignment 1
To me, effective communication means being able to convey my message across to my target audience or person clearly. If I am not able to do so I would have wasted both me and my audience’s time. It could also create a lot of unnecessary misunderstandings. There was once where I went out with my friend, a girl, but I just simply informed my girlfriend that I was going out with a friend. My girlfriend found out and she got angry and suspicious. Effective communications skills will also be important to my career development. If my manager or fellow colleagues find that I cannot convey ideas clearly they may not involve me in bigger projects or more important jobs. During national service I once declined doing a task and my superior did not dedicate a task to me for quite a while. It felt bad and I felt redundant. I also feel that if I am being able to communicate effectively, I would be a more confident person. There would be fewer barriers for me in reaching out to others and I would be able to network more effectively. It was this lack of confidence that lost me the chance in going after a girl I admired during Junior College. Delivering concise and clear messages is extremely important in this fast-paced world, one that is very dependent on emails and short messaging services. People nowadays simply do not have the time and patience to read long, vague and boring messages thus effective communication skills are highly sort after. Thus, in summary, if I am able to communicate effectively, I would create less misunderstandings, improve my career chances, be more confident and not put off others from reading my message.
First Lesson
The first lesson was carried out today and lets just say that I did not regret taking the module. Firstly, the lecturer, Mr. Brad, was interesting and humorous. This went a long way in preventing me from falling asleep, which could have easily occurred after the heavy lunch I had. He introduced the module to us allowing us to know what we have signed up for. Activities were also held to help everyone get to know each other which lead me to find out that my classmates are quite a great bunch, being friendly, spontaneous and fun. My classmates are a pretty diverse group being from a few different faculties. I am glad to have remembered most of my classmate names, if not all. Great classmates and an interesting lecturer are certainly important ingredients in making me look forward to the next lesson, instead of having to drag my feet to class!
