Reflection on my oral presentation

For the oral presentation today, I felt I was very nervous. I do not understand where but I get very uptight everytime I need to give a presentation. It is perhaps due to the fact that I am an only child and do not get many opportunities to speak in public. My legs were shaking badly and I had to control it if not there could be an earthquake! I tried my best to maintain eye-contact with everybody but am not sure how successful I was. I felt my voice projection was loud and clear enough. My only worry was whether my voice was shaking when I was speaking. My body gesture was a little slanted as I was having a hip injury that was causing me some pain and I am not sure if it was too obvious. My last worry was if I had enough non-verbal cues and if the cues that I used were more helpful than distracting. I somehow also feel that I looked at the screen all too often. I wonder if it is true? Nonetheless, the presentation was a good learning experience and exposure for me. I feel better prepared and more ready for my next presentation now. I hope I am not as nervous anymore also in my next presentation.

  1. Hi Ken Jie,

I find that you were a confident speaker, and gave the audience the impression that you were serious about your work. Your big eyes also helped in showing your conviction. If only you could maintain more regular eye contact, you could have jerked everyone into sitting upright and glued to your speech.

I noticed that you had the habit of putting your left hand on your hip while speaking. Now I understand that it was due to your hip injury. But this was no excuse. What if you had groin injury? (Haha~)

You liked to point your right hand when emphasizing important points. This non-verbal cue was actually simple and effective.

Other than my previous points, I did not find other faults with your presentation. Overall, I find that you were calm and steady and could deliver your content in a straight forward manner.

  2. Hi Ken Jie,

Thanks for sharing about your reflections on your presentation. In my opinion you did a very good job.

I personally did not realise your non-verbal cues or slanted body posture. If anything i'm impressed you managed to keep upright give your hip injury.

I felt that maybe you were rushing through your presentation a little due to the nervousness. I suppose that could be rectified with a little more practice the day or night before to get your train of thoughts more clear.

Here's a little something that helps me out whenever i'm nervous. I try not to pysch myself up before the presentation. Instead, I use the time to try and communicate and joke with the audience, it helps me to break the tension as well as deliver a smoother speech. I'm not too sure whether that would work for everyone though. haha.

I liked that you were very confident during the delivery, other than the pace of your presentation, nothing else suggested to me that you were very tense or nervous.

Good job on the presentation Ken Jie!

    regards,
    aldrich

  3. Hi Ken Jie,

I hope you had a great birthday!

Anyway the earthquake thing in your post was really funny. No, I did not feel the tremors, and I honestly did not even notice any shaking in your legs.

In fact, you had really good voice projection (no, not shaky), and your speech was loud and clear. Another point that impressed me in your presentation was your excellent eye contact with the audience! That to me is one of the more challenging aspects of a presentation, and you did it so naturally!

The only thing that I felt could be improved on was what a lot of other people did too, that being standing too far away. And because you were hiding behind the table with the laptop, it somehow felt that you did not want the focus to be on you.

But other than that, you were a fantastic presenter in my opinion! You were poised and confident. Like what I said, I was really impressed! =)

  4. Ken jie,

You definitely did fine in the presentation >_<|| In fact, you even did much better than the peer teaching. You made great cue cards and did minimal reference to them. Besides, we even changed some of the contents right on the presentation day. You did great in "absorbing" and presenting the materials.

I feel that you sounded confident and definitely no earthquakes. I vaguely remembered you stood slightly away from facing the front, but that's pretty much alright. You had bring the audience attention to the pics and stats at some point of time.

I'm sure you had great exposure from ES2007s presentations because you looked like you were inspired to become a tutor in CELC! (as seen from presentation evaluation in HR2002!) And also, how we start to realise the ugliness of data-dumping in HR2002 (:

  5. Hello!

I thought your eye contact was great! You did not turn around and refer back to the slides much though I think! You maintained a lot of eye contact with the audience in fact! Yep you have good voice project and I could hear you loudly and clearly from the back!

You actually appeared relaxed and confident in your presentation even though you mentioned that you were very nervous! As for your body gestures though, I found some hand movements quite distracting at some point (Just on some occasions) but other than that, you were fine!

Also, it was very polite of you to greet the audience when you took the stage after the previous presenter!

P.S I didn’t really notice you had a hip injury hahahaha!

  7. Hey man Ken Jie! =) Finally the presentations are over! Woohoo!

Before we let all our hair down and party, I got to comment on your presentation first. =P In all, everything is good for your team performance and I don’t see much of a problem. A small eye aside, there was eye contact actually! =) Your non-verbal actions were great (A good example I can learn from) and your voice projection was brilliant. I still cannot figure out how you managed to talk in a slow and steady yet attraction grabbing yet clear and concise. ~Kowtows~ The only suggestion is that perhaps you can try to look at the audience for a longer duration and speak while eye contact is maintained. I understand that this is a rather difficult task but once you achieve that, you have no problems at all! Good job!

Oh yeah, have you seen my happy birthday message to you on Facebook? Hope you had a great celebration. ~Wink wink~

    Regards,
    Ivan
